These are real places in the world where people dare not tread…well at least they never tread alone.

1. The Island of the Dolls – Isla de las Muñecas, Mexico island of the dolls 300x150

Just south of Mexico City, between the canals of Xochimilco, you can find one of Earth’s creepiest places.

On a small island with a sad background that was never intended to be a tourist destination.

The island is known as Isla de las Munecas but it’s better known by its nickname “The Island of the Dolls”.

It is dedicated to the lost soul of a poor girl who met her fate too soon in strange circumstances.

It is said that a girl was found drowned in mysterious circumstances many years ago on this island and that the dolls are possessed by her spirit.

Local legend says that the dolls move their heads and arms and even opened their eyes.

Some witnesses claim they had heard the dolls whispering to each other, while others who were on a boat near the island said the dolls lured them to come down to the island.


 

2. Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave – San Ignacio, Belize Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave 254x199

Sparkling, calcite-covered skeletons of children who may have been sacrificed to appease an angry god.

Inside this cave lies the skeletal remains of 14 people, many of them children. All were reportedly killed by some kind of blunt force trauma to the head.

It is believed those left in the cave were sacrificed to Mayan gods.

What makes this cave one of our creepiest places is that many of the dead have become calcified over time, giving them a crystal-like appearance.


3. Capuchin Catacombs – Palermo, Sicily, Italy Capuchin Catacombs 281x180

The Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo are burial crypts in Palermo, Sicily, in southern Italy. They draw visitors as a somewhat gruesome tourist attraction.

The catacombs act as a cemetery to an estimated 8,000 mummies that line the walls.

Some of the human remains are now skeletal which makes it one of the creepiest places you’ll find.

The last body was interred at the site in 1920.


4. Bran Castle – Bran, Romania

Bran Castle, also known as “Dracula’s Castle,” is a national monument and landmark in Romania.

Many associate vampires with Transylvania, the region in central Romania, in large part because of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula.”

The House of Draculesti ruled Transylvania hundreds of years ago and one ruler, Vlad III, is said to have been so barbaric that he earned the name “Vlad the Impaler.”

Today you can tread in the footsteps of the night stalker himself.

Perched precariously on a rock high above a valley near Brașov in Romania, Bran Castle is open for business, cashing in on its nefarious reputation as Dracula’s former abode.


5. The North Yungas Road – Bolivia The North Yungas Road Death Road 184x274

If you have a fear of heights then the North Yungas Road makes it one of the creepiest places that you’ll ever travel on.

The North Yungas Road, which leads from La Paz to Coroico in the Yungas region of Bolivia in some places looks down into a 2,000-foot abyss.

The two-way road that travels between that abyss and solid rock, narrows to a mere 12-foot-wide path which is how it earned its nickname “Death Road.”


6. The Door to Hell – Derweze, Turkmenistan Door to hell 320x180

The so-called “Door to Hell” or “Gate to Hell,” is a natural gas crater in Derweze, Turkmenistan.

The crater is the result of a natural gas field that collapsed into an underground cavern in 1971.

Geologists reportedly set it on fire in 1971 to curb the spread of methane gas, but it continues to burn today.


7. Hanging Coffins of Sagada – Sagada, Philippines 

The Hanging Coffins of Sagada are just a few of the cliff-side burials around the world. The tombs in the Philippines reportedly follow an ancient funeral custom that entombs the deceased in coffins attached to rock faces or within caves in the face of cliffs.

Ancient literature from the Tang Dynasty suggests the coffins’ placements corresponded with status, while others say the placements prevented animals from reaching the bodies and did not take up value farm space for burials, according to CNN.

Philippines Lifestyle reports that the Sagada people have practiced such burials for more than 2,000 years and that some of the coffins are “well over a century old.”


8. Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital – Beelitz, Germany Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital 272x185

Once a sanatorium to reportedly house people with fatal tuberculosis, the site in Germany was converted into a military hospital complex used during World War I.

Adolf Hitler is said to have been treated at the site after he was wounded in the war.

The primarily abandoned complex still features crumbling surgical and psychiatry wards.

A small portion of the complex is reportedly still used for neurological rehabilitation and Parkinson’s research.


Centralia – Pennsylvania, United States Centralia mine fire 300x168

Centralia is a near-ghost town in a mining area of Pennsylvania certainly qualifies it as being one of the creepiest places on Earth.

The town was evacuated in 1962 because of dangerous underground fires, known as the Centralia mine fire.

The fires continue to burn and few have dared to live among the noxious fumes.


10. Chernobyl – Pripyat, Ukraine chenobyl

The residents of Pripyat were less than 3 kilometers away from the reactor went it critical.

Pripyat’s 50,000 residents were evacuated 36 hours following the explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986.

Airborne radioactive particles make the town uninhabitable and another of our Creepiest places.

While nature and time have slowly leveled the abandoned structures.

Today, the once beautiful town by Soviet standards is a chilling ghost town, and its dilapidated buildings bear witness to the resident’s hasty departure.
